Introducing the PRE-1000 Standard for Plastics Recyclers

Download Policy Brief

The PRIMUS project, funded by Horizon Europe, is proud to present the PRE-1000 standard—a new tool designed to help plastics recyclers ensure compliance with chemical regulations. Created by Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE), this voluntary industry standard allows recyclers to verify the presence or absence of harmful substances (Substances of Concern) in a cost-effective way.

What is the PRE-1000 Standard?

The PRE-1000 tool enables recyclers to use handheld X-ray fluorescence (XRF) devices to quickly and reliably screen for harmful substances. This practical method helps recyclers comply with regulations like REACH and the Waste Framework Directive, ensuring that their materials are safe for reuse.

Validated and Trusted

Through extensive validation by the PRIMUS project, the PRE-1000 tool has been confirmed as an effective solution for monitoring Substances of Concern. Recyclers like Coolrec B.V. have successfully integrated it into their quality control processes, boosting confidence in the compliance and safety of their recycled materials.

Key Benefits:

  • Low-cost, quick monitoring of harmful substances
  • Simple integration into existing processes
  • Compliant with REACH and other regulations
