2nd Consortium Meeting in Joensuu

Joensuu and UEF hosted the 2nd Consortium Meeting of PRIMUS Project A warm welcome despite temperatures below -15ºC.   This December (13-14) we travelled to Joensuu (Finland) for the second Consortium Meeting and General Assembly. This was a long-waited opportunity for the partners to meet again since the project’s kick-off meeting in Espoo and Tampere, also in Finland. During these two days we focused on updating the partners about the work developed by the different teams and was a good opportunity to discuss with peers detail aspects of the research, get work aligned, and set the basis for the work for the following months. These activities were carried out...

The conference and event season just started for this Autumn 2022.

Dear Partners and Community, The conference and event season just started for this Autumn 2022. We recently presented PRIMUS Project EU at the Second VALBREE conference on “Opportunities & challenges in plastics recycling” where our colleague Mathilde Taveau from Plastics Recyclers Europe presented the Project activities and objectives as part of her speech «Monitoring des substances dans les matières plastiques recyclées» In coming dates, PRIMUS Project EU will also be present in Germany at K-2022 show in Düsseldorf, where you can meet Teresa Oberhauser at Circularise's (External Booth OA Hall 4/04.3) on October 16-26. Additionally, at the Innovation Forum 4Plastics (October 13-14), Carolina Mejia Niño and Patxi Saez de Viteri Alonso, Ph.D. from MONDRAGON Corporation will present PRIMUS Project EU to the plastics recycling community in Mallorca. We...

PRIMUS Project – Developing new technologies for plastic recycling and circular economy of plastics

12 European Organisations look into creating new high-tech added value products from recycled polymers Funded by the European Union, the recently started PRIMUS Project seeks the development of new technologies for the recycling of common polymers so they can be used as starting materials for the manufacturing of new added value products. In today’s European economy, plastics and other polymeric compounds are common raw materials for the manufacturing of all sorts of goods and components. The European manufacturing industry is highly dependent on this type of materials for critical sectors like automotive and aerospace, electronic and electrical equipment like home appliances and consumer electronics.  The European...

Pilot 4. Washing machine door seal

Upgrading of sulphur crosslinked EPDM from end-of-life cycle washing machine seals, with an advanced recycling process, to get recycled EPDM polymer suitable to produce a new washing machine door seal able to fulfil the tight requirements of the OEM washing machine manufacturers. Different methods will be investigated and tested, including advanced milling processes and different reclaim processes (thermo-mechanical, cryogenic, chemic,) in order to find the champion formulation, the one with the maximum percentage of recyclates that fulfil the technical specifications and allow an elaboration process under control. This is a closed-loop demonstration. ...

Pilot 3. Refrigerator to refrigerator – Food contact demonstration

Upgrading of recycled HIPS from refrigerator liners. Impact modification of HIPS recyclates will be done with the VAREX line for re-application in refrigerator liners and other household appliances. Upgrading towards food contact applications, safety and migration tests will be carried out at VTT and thorough analysis done at UEF. Based on results, the recyclate recipe will be iterated to meet the requirements of food contact materials as a recycled material. ...

Pilot 2. Automotive cooling circuit

Upgrading of recycled PP and EPDM to react together during the Thermoplastic Elastomer Vulcanizate (TPV) elaboration process of a dynamic vulcanization in twin-screw compounder to reach a TPV compound suitable for an automotive application. A TPV will be obtained with those recycled elements in different percentage in order to find the boundaries to fulfil the technical requirements needed for the automotive cooling function and its affection in their elaboration process (twin-screw TPV extrusion line). The champion formulations will be those with the maximum percentage of recyclates that fulfil the technical specifications and allow an elaboration process under control. ...

Pilot 1. Automotive interior

Upgrading recycled PC/ABS material suitable for automotive interior application using injection moulding technology. Different formulations will be developed to analyse and establish the processing window of the materials, the blending and flow property stabilization, the stabilization of PC, the impact of every percentage modification of the recyclates combined with addition of virgin polymers and chain extenders, flow additives, etc. An inline viscosity control of the parameters will help to carry out the screening trials of the new formulations from a processing and performance point of view until a champion formulation will be obtained. ...
